Video Captioning: Lessons Learned Implementing a Do-It-Yourself Approach

Videos, podcasts and animations are, for many students, engaging supplements to traditional lectures. But their effectiveness as a learning tool is limited when they are not captioned. Captions are essential for students with some types of disabilities, but they are used and appreciated by nearly everyone. English language learners enjoy the ability to read along with a video, as do students who possess a visual-linguistic learning style. Students listening to a recorded lecture rely on captions to understand new vocabulary or make sense of a mumbled word. And who doesn’t enjoy the ability to search for a word or phrase in the transcript of a long video or podcast?

In this session you will learn a simplified a process for creating captions using Microsoft Word and Camtasia Studio. Additionally, we will share with you one academic department’s journey in implementing a departmental captioning process. The Department Occupational Therapy has developed and is piloting a process for captioning all multimedia content in the curriculum with readily available software tools.
