Research studies indicate that self-advocacy is a key factor in academic and life success. This lecture and discussion-based session focuses on the concept of self-advocacy as a foundation for improved long-term student success. The session will share current research findings and, primarily, discuss the philosophy of self-advocacy and how it can be incorporated into classroom teaching/learning without involving added effort.

Target Audience: Faculty and Teaching Assistants


  1. Identify factors that assist in or detract from student academic success.
  2. Relate current self-advocacy research and its impact on student success.
  3. Review the benefits of self-advocacy to faculty and students alike.
